If you had a service business (like I did), back in the 1990's, there was this evil gigantic thing called the yellow pages.
And there was immense pressure to spend vast somes of money each year- committed to this one advertising medium.
To make it worse, you were lumped in with all your local competitors because the yellow page salespeople (which are your digital salespeople today), didn't know how to separate you with your marketing.
Google Replaces The Yellow Pages
In March, 1999 a guy named Larry and another named Sergey tried selling a concept called Google to Excite.Com. Excite rejected the offer, so Larry & Sergey moved into a Palo Alto office and started Google. That day changed the face of advertising forever.
But more importantly, the huge yellow page companies saw the end of their monopoly. Millions of dollars in ad revenue were threatened.
The Yellow Page Companies Pivot
With offices all over the country and millions of yellow page contracts being cancelled, the yellow page moguls faced certain extinction. They watched as the yellow page directories in major cities shrank from a massive catalog to a thin magazine.
Small business owners were flocking to online advertising becuase that's where their customers were searching.
With an army of ad salespeople and a huge list of business owners, they decided to become an "online digital marketing" company overnight. They acquired a domain called "yellowbooks.com." Which became yp.com, etc.
The point was, all they did was create a digital version of their old yellow pages. Great, that means as a small business you were lumped right back into listings next to all your local competitors. I guess it was easier to keep track of all their ongoing revenue that way.
Time To Re-Brand
Many small business owners did not want to return to a yellow page directory listing, off line or online! And the yellow page companies knew this. So the Berry Company, Donnelly, etc. had to create a new company, with a new modern name.
Vivial was the new digital marketing company branch of the yellow page companies. Since they had a captive database which came from local phone companies and the yellow page contracts, they could train their existing army of yellow page sales people to be digital marketing experts, overnight! I know this for a fact, because they tried to hire me many years ago.

When I was a 21 year old marketing punk fresh out of college, I bounced around corporate jobs butting heads with managers who insisted that it was never the job of the marketing division to sell anything, they said that was the job of the sales department. I knew then, instinctively that when a small business owner spends a dollar for marketing, that dollar should return with friends attached.
Our small agency considers it completely unethical to spend client's money on marketing and not demand a return.
So after quitting 2 jobs in 2 years, I left my Dilbert Cube of office politics and corporate bulls*&t to do my own thing. At the insistence of a close friend I ended up starting a commercial cleaning franchise in Cincinnati, Ohio. This is where my REAL marketing education started. Yes, I earned my street marketing MBA quickly.
Indeed- I have been precisely where you are. My biggest expense was local digital marketing and the horrible, horrible book called the Yellow Pages. The Berry Company, Vivial, Ruben Donnelly- the companies always kept changing names and changing my representatives to keep me off balance I guess. I'll bet you in my first two years of my cleaning business I spent over $50,000 trying to corner the local market.

I remember vividly, one bright Monday morning in October when my Vivial rep. walked into my business. Without expressing any emotion I informed him I was pulling out all the digital marketing and yellow page ads and that I was bringing everything in house. I can still see the shocked look on his face as he put his large briefcase full of new sales material back into the trunk of his red Ford Focus and drove away.
That was my Cortez moment. I burned my ships.
